Axis & Allies Miniatures Custom Terrian

Hey,

I've been working on some custom terrain so that I can build and store my maps. I got a crazy idea and this is what I came up with:

I used some green turf carpet and cut it into 3" hex and hot glued the edges and found out that it makes them stay in place on the table better. I then painted the edges black so they would stand out. So far I only have grass, but I'm determined to get some other terrain in there.

Dude that looks like a serious amount of work
Would cutting up a vinyl hex mat and hot gluing (or glue for vinyl) some sand/flock/ or whatever work?
I applaud you commitment to bringing the game up the next level of realism.
